final reflection
English has never been my best or favorite subject, particularly because I am not extremely good at articulating my thoughts and organizing them into a coherent paper. I much prefer writing my stream of consciousness. However, I did enjoy writing many of the papers this quarter, especially since they were relevant to me and I had the freedom to choose a topic of interest. The major papers encompassed a large topic, and I had a lot of ideas on what I could write. Looking back, however, I realize that I did not get to fully develop all of my ideas. Though one quarter is a long span of time (ten weeks… which is about a fifth of the year!), I did not have enough time to read all of the sources in depth and delve into each of the topics. I would like to learn more about the conflict (and harmony) between science and religion, not only in context of Newton's works. Last quarter, my professor briefly mentioned Newton's theology. This quarter, I got write a research paper on the topic. Perhaps next quarter, I can better understand the true relation between science and religion.
Throughout the quarter, I developed my writing skills. I am still growing as a writer, however, I feel I am better able to express myself since I am not limited my previous knowledge on claims and now understand that a complex claim can contain much more information and still be valid. In analyzing papers, though I still struggle to extract the key idea quickly, I can analyze texts better and more in depth than before as shown through outcome three. By writing a personal paper (e.g. first short assignment) and a research paper (e.g. second major paper), I was able to demonstrate the different types of Englishes and academic discourses that I learned about this quarter. My reflection on the four outcomes show that I have mastered the key concepts of writing a successful paper, though there is always room for improvement. I can always find ways to make my writing more eloquent or flowing, include nuances to reflect my character, and provide an even more complex claim that can take up more than simply seven pages.
Overall, this class has done more than make me grow as a writer; it has familiarized me to new topics as well. The workshops and peer reviews helped me develop skills necessary to produce a well-articulated and supported, complex, persuasive argument that was tailored for a purpose and to a specific audience. The topics helped me develop a better understanding of languages and various Englishes and introduced me to different academic discourses and Newton's theology. Therefore, I was able to grow not only academically but also intellectually. The materials I learned in the course can contribute to not only future writings in other classes and situations but also my own philosophy and stance on issues such as conflicts in languages, science and religion, and academic discourses.
